Only wish for that Deep Dark Abyss
To be honest, this is just a call to see if any one else on my friends list has dreamwidth accounts since the last time I asked - if you do, feel free to friend [personal profile] sabrina.

To be honest, after that advertising atrocity LiveJournal gifted me with this morning, I'm really tempted to make more of my base postings there and simply cross post to LJ. I think I need to spend some time really figuring out how to read my flist over there and if I can do that...

Well, I am caught up till Wednesday now. I really have got to stop not writing during the week, mostly not because it is so impossible to catch up on weekends, it is doable, but it means that I do nothing else for the entire weekend.

Luckily, it seems that my original problem, which was that I had no idea where to take the middle, seems to have been solved when I jumped forward to write the 'end'. I am now back into the middle section, and it is moving, I keep shaving off chunks of hundreds or thousands and I feeling a bit better about things - it is only 6:00, and I keep giving myself the 'get to this point before I go get tea' method, which is working.

I told R today over lunch that I have no desire to even contemplate how much of this is going to get shaved out in post-editing. And of course I fear the continuity is lacking, but that is something to deal with in editing mode. I do still like this story - I like what it tells and that does help.

Apparently I do NaNoWriMo on odd years. Why do I say this? Well, mainly because that seems to be what I actually have in my tags as years that I actually attempted NaNoWriMo, and yes, this year will be one of them.

I'm thinking I'm going to put some writing up on my dreamwidth, but because it will be original fiction and not fan fiction, I will friend lock it. If you'd like to see it, let me know and I'll add you. I believe I can add access to an open ID login as well so if you have an IJ or LJ account and don't have (or want) a Dreamwidth, that can probably be arranged. Or at least, I'll play around with it.

In the meantime, I posted up more old Star Wars fan fiction, and got a kick out of reading parts of "Lighthouse", which was the Buffy & Wilco fan fiction that Rika and I wrote together. So far that's the only thing on my website that's not now also archived at my Dreamwidth -- and it is partially there, but the html on it was crappy, so I have to clean it up before posting and thus it's not complete yet.

Updates.

BSG Cast photos!
Right, so yesterday's great activity was to clean up my My Documents folder. This enabled all sorts of fun, including looking at some of my first fan fiction, much of which was archived at some point on the web and on sites that are now closed.

Now, there's a part of me that goes, why on earth would I want to post up something I wrote over ten years ago and with all of the inherent bad punctuation, crappy dialogue, and questionable characterizations that went along with something written at approximately age 17?

I think the answer to that question is simply that I finished something, and in the case of "Stark Promises", it was my first hugely long finished fiction full stop -- over 50,000 words so far and I haven't posted the last half of it. And my Buffy fan fiction I wrote close to 5 years ago and is still up, now isn't it?

So, I went through and reformatted my Star Wars fan fiction. I'd already put up parts 1 - 3, but Part Four is up now as well. Parts 5 - 10 are formatted and ready to be put up tonight when I have time. Then I have one more short Star Wars fan fiction that comes before (or after?) To Mara, With Love that I will put up as well.

From there, I'm going to look through the rest of my old writing and decide what, if any of it, I want to put up. The Star Wars stuff used to be archived on fanfiX.com. I'd half like to put up the Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman fiction that I wrote, but I'm afraid I may not have original files for that, which will make it more difficult to put up.

This isn't directly a fandom issue, but I believe it does impact fandom in a round about way, so I'm going to post it here as well.

The most August/September issue of American Libraries contained the article The Download Dilemma, dealing specifically with music, but I believe is extraordinarily relevant as we move into a world where digital media is becoming more and more common whether that be in music (where it is highly prevalent), books, films, or television.

The difficulty with download is access. When you purchase a physical copy of an item, the rights you have are reasonably straightforward and clear. However, most digital downloads - even as places like Amazon have gotten more realistic about content management - have fairly stringent rules for use.

In this case, the article is speaking specifically to albums that are only available as downloads and the conundrum the author presents is, I believe, a hugely important one to anyone who is interested in art. If we leave the preservation of artistic mediums in the hands of the publishers, you will soon run into the problem of out of print books, CDs, records. Need I say Disney vault here? When a film is in the vault the only way to access it is video rental, libraries, and others who own a physical copy of the film and are willing to allow you to borrow it and introduce it The Little Mermaid to your little girl. It's not unusual for items to go out of print either purposefully or because they simply are not seen as money makers. Without the libraries of the world, how does someone have access to that information?

And so, as we move head on into the digital world, these are the issues that I think we must grapple with and demand reasonable behaviour from the publishing companies.
Disney; Robin Hood & Maid Marion
So finished up the second season of Robin Hood last night and Mythie has the first episode of season three kindly waiting for me to watch it when I get a chance so I thought I would babble on about it before I actually watch the season three. I'd actually watched through Netflix a lot of second season that Mythie had recorded but I hadn't seen the last few episodes, and of course even though season three has aired in the UK, it's just now airing on BBC America, and it's one of those things where I was too lazy to try to watch it when it originally aired so I am watching it now.

This is not your Father's Robin Hood, or at least that's what I told R. last night and it's kinda true. Because I think about Disney's version (of course fluffy), and then even the Kevin Costner version, and there's this fluffy sort of 'fairy tale'-esque feeling about the legend. BBC's Robin Hood doesn't have that, and I rather find that I like it.

We're going to put the rest of this under a cut for the unspoiled because there are major spoilers here through series 2. )

And those are my kinda disjointed thoughts cause as I've been typing this Rudy and Brina-cat have been distracting me quite a bit so it may be somewhat disjointed.

And finally watched last season's finale of House as well. I'm going to miss my Battlestar Galactica, but it isn't as if there is absolutely no television at all that I'm looking forward to right now.

Okay, this is actually old, and a repost from my CDJ and my LJ, but I thought I'd put it here anyway, since I'm collecting fic and meta here.

Just a word to the wise: While I'm posting it here, cause - particularly in the first part - this is more of a general personality profile, the latter parts are very definitely in regards to characterization at Blurred Lines, an AU first war Harry Potter RPG.

This is like five+ pages in word, so basically unless you're feeling masochistic or extremely curious, I don't recommend it.

‘The world isn’t split into good people and Death Eaters’: The Motivations of Severus Snape

All of the characters I play are complex characters, but I believe Severus Snape is probably the most complex character I play. This is possibly because we know so much about the character – and at the same time there are several mysteries – that of all of the characters I play on a regular basis, Severus is the one most defined by canon, and thus the one that I must consider most carefully when putting into a game or a fic, because he has to be presented in a way that rings true to his presentation in the book.

And gosh, that’s six pages of text and I didn’t even get to breaking down “The Prince’s Tale”, like I was going to. But I think that’s more than enough for today. And it’s in a very specific organized form for me to read over again and internalize on for a bit.

And only for Severus Snape. There is no other character I would write this much detail on.

Okay, maybe Charlie, but there's not as much text to analyze there...

A few non-spoilery overall sorts of comments. I really enjoyed this film. Pretty much, anything that is not as bad as Prisoner of Azkaban was, is a good film for me, and this one managed to be a good film. There is something nagging at me a little bit, but I can't figure out what it is so I'm going to ignore that for the time being.

I've read all 7 books so consider this to be spoilers for all books as well as for the film.

HBP Spoilers Ahoy )

Overall, really enjoyed it. I have quibbles, but PoA remains my least favourite film, and I think this one remains pretty even with OotP in terms of having enjoyed it.

Finally got around to watching The Reader last night. Overall I have to say that I really was intrigued by this film. It is not one for people who are offended by nudity as there is quite a bit of it, both male and female, in the first bit of the film. However, the nudity is certainly not the point, and as is a hallmark of many well put together films, I find myself thinking about it long after, and considering the layers in the story. Overall, I thought it was very well written, directed, and acted, and it left me thinking.

We interrupt your morning for some fangirlish squeeing.

Narcissa's hair aside, the WB set department seems to have done well. Particularly, they seem to have gotten Spinner's End precisely right. Look at all of the books!!

And now tea.

I realise I'm months behind with this, but I finally got the opportunity to watch Caprica last night, and I have thoughts.

End result is intrigued enough to tune in to see what they do with it. And clearly I need some BSG icons on this journal.

In the interest of moving my LiveJournal towards friends only and yet keeping random discussions public, I'm going to write this on Dreamwidth and just crosspost like crazy.

I'm still musing over Star Trek this morning, so some spoilery thoughts and discussion underneath the cut.

I keep seeing 'I really like this' on my flist, which is fascinating to me I guess because the sense I got from both R was more 'meh'. I think I'm somewhere in between, really.

And what I'm somewhat curious about from my flist is where people fall within the realm of Trekkies. For myself, I wouldn't consider myself a Trekkie, although perhaps I'm getting closer than I might have been at one point. Essentially I've seen almost all of TNG at this point, much of Enterprise, I-IV of the films, several episodes of TOS, several episodes of Voyager and a very, very few of Deep Space Nine. I've read no books, written no fan fic and so, since I can't rattle off random facts about the universe or have things like the blueprints to the Enterprise on my bookshelf (R does, and they're very cool), I really don't feel like I can consider myself a Trekkie even though I know I've seen way more than some people probably have.

I keep coming up with things about Dreamwidth that I really freaking like, such as, oh, the fact that I can actually code usernames to redirect to insanejournal ([insanejournal.com profile] hafren) or livejournal ([livejournal.com profile] sabrinanymph). So far it's the little things that just make me go, oh, why hasn't someone thought of that before, thank you, and I am happy.

And yes, I know this has absolutely nothing to do with creative writing stuff, it's just a squee.
Girl carrying a stack of books
I'm writing this post on Dreamwidth, mostly cause I want to test the cross-posting features on the site. In theory this should crosspost to my IJ, my LJ, my Journalfen (which is sorely neglectified) and of course my dreamwidth journal.

Brina-cat is absolutely intrigued by the great out-doors today. She has spent most of her time staring out the window, or the open (screen shut) door in the dining room, just watching birds and things.

And I've gotten several more fiction pieces transferred into my dreamwidth journal. Almost all of them back-dated, cause I want the original post date (or a reasonable estimate) on the fic as it's posted there. I think I will eventually want to play with the CSS for the site and get away from a default type theme, but that's going to take some thought about what I want to do with it, and my thought is I probably want to keep it pretty simple if I can do so.

And I think there's a very good chance I may want to move towards a friends only presence on LJ after this - but I shall see.
Sarah Michelle Gellar in Suburban Girl.
I've long been looking for a creative dump. I use my permanent account on LiveJournal for actual journaling, but so many of the older creative entries are now flocked, and I'd actually like to move my journal more towards a flocked status consistently.

So this seemed like a possibility that I wanted to play with.
