OK, I finally succumbed. My phone has a podcast subscribing app, and because my sleep patterns are all to cock at the moment I'm missing a lot of my favourite radio4ness, so I am subscribing to podcasts. Are there any that you guys would recommend?

I already have: everything I want from BBC radio, House of Comments, Pod Delusion and Droppin' Science. What else is essential? Am particularly interested in feministy stuff and sci-fi, preferably UK-based.

ETA: oh yes, and I want PROPER urls, NOT bloody iTunes. I know most of you will realise that already, but just in case... ;)

The Peculiar Grammar of House Elves

There is a thought that crossed my mind a few times regarding the House Elves in Harry Potter, and the way they speak. For example, from the story I'm currently reading: "You is next door, Miss. You lets Kimby know if you be needing anything else, also."
Why do House Elves speak like that? )

"Ghost Writer" and random Bujold

Upon having seen "The Ghost Writer", I have to say: did Polanski watch season 6 of Spooks? Because, seriously. I refuse to give up my feminist cred for having seen a Roman Polanski movie )

In other news, I reread The Warrior's Apprentice, and all I can say is, "You mean, he's like that all the time?" Heee! Also, someone needs to write a Yuletide story about Elena Visconti.

And now I shall crash out and head to bed like a good little bureaucrat.

In other other news, the Macy's suit sale is a dangerous thing, and Calvin Klein needs to reconsider their vanity sizing: no way on god's green earth am I legitimately a 4.

With the possible casting of Chris Evans as Captain America and as Siege event heads to a close, let us reflect on the gravitas that will be required of the Sentinel of Liberty and the last time Asgard took arms against U.S. forces in Avengers #63 (or #478, depending on what you follow).

END OF TIME FIC YAY

I have finally, with a little over two weeks left before next season airs, finished my End of Time fic! It exists in the main due to coaxing and sometimes threatening from [personal profile] filia_belialis, and was made much more presentable by the betaing of [personal profile] feverbeats. In the process I rediscovered my love of writing insanely at four in the morning, and also my love of John Simm's amazingly expressive face.

It is kind of a sequel to the naming of things, but only if you want it to be.

after me comes the flood, Doctor/Master, now with six billion fewer Masters and more mindsex! I still kill Ten, though. :D

You're all fired.

Look, you KNOW that the late 19th century is not really my period, and you saw me getting into Sherlock Holmes fandom regardless. So what's your excuse for not pointing me at Edward Carpenter and telling me he was MADE OF AWESOME?

He believed gay love was a mechanism for radical social change! He inspired Forster to write "Maurice"! He campaigned for social and economic independence for women! He wore sandals and frolicked nude while eating nuts and berries! With his working class husband! In the 1890s, while Wilde was on trial!

In conclusion: fired.

The motion to recommit has failed and the Health Care Reform bill has passed in the House, no thanks to a single Republican.

And yes, I wanted the single payer option and yes, I wanted an extension of abortion funding for low-income women, but as somebody who went without any health coverage (except for the kind where you go into an ER and lie) for a decade because there was no way in the world I could afford it, I can't help but see this as a damned good thing.

(eta God. MSNBC is reporting that one of the GOP Congressmen yelled out "baby killer" to the notoriously anti-choice Bart Stupak while he was speaking. Jackass.)

Fushigi Yuugi--Why Miaka has issues

While looking to see if maybe I had some of the old Jademan comics, I ran across the first issue of Animerica Extra. Back in 1998, Viz Comics published a magazine called Animerica that had anime and manga news, as well as some actual translated manga. It was successful enough to spin off an all-manga monthly.

And hey, let's take a look at the first chapter of Fushigi Yuugi, by Yu Watase. We'll focus on the part that's different from the first episode of the anime version, Miaka's relationship with her mother. 13 pages of 39, safe for work, but may be triggery for domestic abuse.

I learned it from watching you, okay? I learned it from watching you! )

Your thoughts, comments?

Why is everyone jizzing over Broken Bells. Why. Whyyyy. I heard a promo for All Songs Considered where a guy was going, "You need to let this album be a part of your life. Whether it's on in the background while you're cooking, or you're listening to it more closely..." Dude, I do not need to let that Shins guy and his voice anywhere near my life. Danger Mouse? Sure. Shins guy? Jesus Christ in a chickenbasket no.

(I think I answered my own question up top with "'cause Shins guy.")

Apropos of a discussion with [personal profile] legionseagle et al about writer's clubs (both the kind wif a nail in the end and the other sort), I have been pondering the ever-fascinating question of editors/betas/what d'yer call them, in a sort of back-brain way.

The basic first instinct of a writer seeking critique seems to me to be to seek out another writer, preferably one whose writing one admires, and ask them for advice.

And it occurs to me that this, which I admit often does work very well, probably works more-or-less in spite of itself.

I say more-or-less in spite of itself because I suspect that the place most people start when picking a beta reader (when you CAN pick, as opposed to being in a situation where there is exactly one person in your fandom who you know how to get hold of who's willing to read your stuff - and that can work out splendidly, actually), is by looking for a writer who has one or more qualities that you think you'd quite like to have, and hoping that those qualities are transmissible through editorial queries. And, as I say, it can work.

But if I may just put in a quiet word for the beta-reader who is first and foremost a, well, a reader?

A good reader. A reader who, in a perfect world, reads widely, in the genre you want to write, in a fairly engaged way, and has strong opinions not so much about how you ought to write, but about what they like to read. and whose reading one admires - by which I mean that when they recommend things to read, you tend to like those things, and when they review or discuss things you have read you tend to find what they have to say interesting, smart, and a pretty good guide to things you yourself might like to read, and when you given them something of yours to read, you know that they are going to read it the first chance they get and you're happy when they like it and look forward to their comments a lot. If they happen also to have a solid grasp of structure, grammar and style, a good ear for prose, and domain knowledge relevant to your genre, well, all I can say to that is I've only ever found one of those and, Reader, I married her. (But we're not exclusive; I bet she'd beta read for you if you bought her a drink first. She likes margaritas, btw.)

Now, many writers, possibly even most writers, are Good Readers. But it's not guaranteed. I am not, in this context, a Good Reader, despite being a professional editor; I am a Good Reader of NON-fiction, which turns out to be a whole different skillset. So I do think that in the endless search for Really Good Beta Readers, there's a whole pile of excellent and enthusiastic readers out there, being badly underused.
